Iain Banks was in the paper recently. He had announced on Twitter that he had cancer and was, essentially, waiting to see what happened. The outpouring of love sent by the public in response to his announcement, people just wanting him to know how much they enjoyed his work, completely overwhelmed him.

He said in the article that he was going to write to all the authors who influenced him and thank them for doing so.

Iain, this page is here because of you.  I read The Wasp Factory as a teenager and have reread it several times since.  The sting in the tail, so to speak, is unforgettable.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks, Abacus, 1984, 184pp, £5.99, ISBN 0-349-10177-9
